What to Expect from Sportfishing

Fly Fishing

The area hosts the annual Gray International Fly Fishing Tournament. You might use the fly fishing technique to catch migratory fish offshore or snook in the mouth of a river or coastal or near an estuary. Snook, also referred to as “Robalo,” is on menus, and you must try it! You can fly fishing in the sea, freshwater rivers, and mangroves.

Marlin Fishing

Marlin is part of the billfish group. In Quepos, there are three types of marlin: blue, black, and striped. Can you imagine a 400-pounder? They are solid and fast. They tail walk across the water at 60 miles per hour. With your line in its mouth, the fight can take 1-3 hours, but that photo with it in your hands is worth it. The current record for the largest black marlin caught in the area was 16 feet in length and 1,500 pounds. General catches are between 100 and 400 pounds. They are released after you take your picture.

Sailfishing

Sailfish have to be released back into their natural habitat after being caught. You can keep and cook a Mahi, yellowfin tuna, snapper, or amberjack for dinner. Sailfish are the most popular in Quepos. Anglers worldwide come to the region to catch them. The peak season is December to April.
